Hard to believe she recovered from a crippling injury at the age of seven to become a successful dancer and choreographer.
Kirkes Mar left her home in Texas at eighteen to follow her career. And so she did, traveling the world and back.
In 1983, Shirley married the artist, Len Berzofsky, who showed her a world of painting.
During those twelve years of marriage they fought a battle against a degenerative illness which took Len’s life. Shirley
magically carried on the legacy by becoming an artist herself, with the help of artist, teacher and friend George Small.
The suggestion of music unconsciously resonates from each painting. You can feel
the dancers engage in a realistic participation of their human drama. The sustained, pervasive
sense of time, the tilt of the head, the body extension, breathes life into its awareness of human talent. Many of Kirkes
Mar’s paintings have been moments of her choreography from original ballets.
Shirleyvalues her gifts as an artist, as much as she valued her gift of dance.
So putting dance on canvas seems to be the most natural thing to do.
